1. May Week Show Announced
2. Sing-through Announced
3. Cabaret Night Announced
*****
1. May Week Show: Dates to be confirmed, but likely the Thursday/Friday of May Week
Get. Excited. We're going back to the river…
GONDOLIERS ON GONDOLAS
We are looking to appoint a DIRECTOR, MUSICAL DIRECTOR and PRODUCER for this fantastic project. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity - not many will ever have the chance to put on a show on the Cam in the middle of May Week, with a guaranteed audience of punters. Literally.
Details below, but be sure to get your applications in to Katie on kew58 by March 2nd at 7pm. Interviews will take place on March 3/4. Please include past experience (if any, it's not a requirement), ideas for the show, and oodles of enthusiasm!
Following the success of HMS Pinafore on Punts in May Week 2011, The Cambridge University Gilbert and Sullivan Society are pleased to announce 'The Gondoliers on Gondolas' for May Week 2013.
In sunny Venice, the Palmieri brothers lead a charmed life. As Gondoliers, they hold mastery over the city's canals and the hearts of the local girls. But the arrival of the Spanish aristocracy (not to mention the Grand Inquisitor) presents a royal revelation and a serious identity crisis to the Gondolieri and their brides - how will they solve this case unprecedented? With romance, political satire, and roses white and roses red, 'The Gondoliers' performed ON GONDOLAS on the river Cam will be a May Week show to remember. Of that there is no manner of doubt, no possible doubt whatever!
*****
2. Sing through: 8pm, 22nd February, Latimer Room, Clare College.
We will be singing through The Pirates of Penzance. Pirate (or policeman, or Major General's daughter) costume is encouraged.
*****
3. Cabaret Night: 7.45pm, 12 March, ADC Bar, Free Entry.
You know the saying "G&Sers long to look forward to an evening where you can perform anything you want to your friends without any pressure and then have a drink afterwards"?
Well your generous committee have laid on just that. We're going to have a cabaret night. Anyone can enter, and you can perform whatever you like. A song from G&S, a piano piece, a duet from Wicked (encouraged) - anything you want! Think Britain's got Talent but without the buzzers and TV cameras. And a smaller stage.
We're doing this on a first come first served basis - so if you want to perform, get your idea in quickly to Law on lmp45 ASAP.
Ticket reservations to watch the show will become available to members only shortly, watch this space…

Dear CUG&S,
I am pleased to announce that the AGM will be held in Clare College's Latimer Room (Ground floor, E Staircase, Old Court; same staircase as the Clare MCR. See this map). A G&Ser or two will stand at the Porter's Lodge to direct people, but if you arrive late and are confused, just ask the Porters themselves. We'll begin at 4pm this Saturday, February 2nd. After we finish eating, drinking, and electing, we'll decamp to a nearby pub for dinner. I've copied the original announcement follows, and I encourage you all to consider running for the Committee.
Best,
Dylan
AGM and Pub Social
The Society's Annual General Meeting will be held at 4pm on Saturday 2 February at 4pm, in the Latimer Room in Clare College. After it finishes, we will decamp to a nearby pub for drinks, dinner, and socialising. There will also be much in the way of FREE FOOD AND DRINK at the AGM itself.
One of the main orders of business at an AGM is to elect a new governing Committee, which will run the Society until the middle of Lent Term 2014. I can't recommend joining the Committee more enthusiastically. You'll get a say in choosing shows, social events, and determining the general direction of the society. You'll have the chance to work closely with the lovely folk of CUG&S. It's also not too much work; if you are a General Member, attendance at meetings (no more than once per month) is the only mandatory time commitment.
If you're interested in running for a named officership, feel free to email the current office-holder for more information:
- Chairman: Lizzie Blackmore (enb31)
- Secretary: Dylan Morris (dm569)
- Treasurer: Rob Brocklehurst (rjb221)
Whether or not you're standing for election, you should come to the AGM. Support friends who are standing for election! See those CUG&S friends you missed so dearly over the holiday! Eat the FREE BRIE before Lizzie Blackmore eats all of it! Drink the FREE WINE! Come to the PUB afterward! But I repeat myself…

A synopsis of Iolanthe:
In England's idyllic countryside, a troupe of Lords on a hunting trip tangle with the mischievous fairies of the mystical forest as they try to woo the much-desired shepherdess Phyllis. For her part, Phyllis loves Strephon, a half-fairy, half-mortal lowly shepherd and nephew of the Fairy Queen. The pompous lords break up the happy couple, so the fairies vow revenge; they follow the lords to London and install one of their own (the hapless Strephon) in Parliament, inciting liberal rebellion! Fireworks and frivolity ensue as lofty lords and feisty fairies collide on the ever bumpy road to love.

Hello to the lovely people of CUG&S,
Some of you may have noticed a few street pianos have appeared around Cambridge this week. They're part of an interactive art piece called "Play Me, I'm Yours". This is not the kind of instruction the fun-loving people of the G&S society can really ignore, so it's time for a singthrough!
For those of you new to the concept, we basically meet up and sing through one of the works of G&S. It's incredibly fun, and this time around we're going to sing through HMS Pinafore.
When? Saturday 27th, 7pm
Where? The street piano at Garret Hostel lane.
Where's that? More info at http://streetpianos.com/cambridge2012/
What if it's raining? We have a backup venue nearby in Memorial Court, and may well leave some poor sod to direct you if you don't know where that is. The poor sod will, most likely, be me.
Who are you and why should I listen to you? Oh yeah, I forgot to say, I'm the social secretary, Nick. Expect more emails from me about socials at short notice.
See you on Saturday!
Nick

Auditions for CUG&S's Michaelmas 2012 Freshers' Show, Princess Ida, will take place at the following times:
- Thursday 4 October, 7:30pm-10:00pm
- Friday 5 October, 7:30pm-10:00pm
- Saturday 4 October, 1:00pm-5:00pm
"But I'm not a fresher!" I hear you cry. Bear in mind that "Freshers' Show" is something of a misnomer. The purpose of the Michaelmas production is to showcase the talents of actors and singers in any class year who have yet to perform extensively with CUG&S. To that end, we try to feature performers who have not previously had a principal role in a Society main show. If you're a veteran of the Cambridge stage with other societies but have never performed with us, the Freshers' show is for you just as much as it is for a first year undergraduate.
Auditions will take place in Clare College's Bennett Room, which is located in the Forbes Mellon Library Building in Memorial Court (map here: http://bit.ly/QD936m). You are strongly encouraged to reserve an audition slot online by visiting http://tinyurl.com/idaaudition but you are also welcome simply to come along and we will fit you in.
Please prepare a piece to sing. If you would like piano accompaniment, please bring sheet music for our accompanist. You will also be asked to read a side of dialogue from the show. Copies will be available outside the audition room, but if you would like to prepare a side in advance, they are posted online (http://tinyurl.com/idasides).
Further information about the show can be found below and on camdram. Feel free to email cuprincessida@gmail.com with questions, and we hope to see many of you at auditions.
PRINCESS IDA
8pm, Tue 20th - Fri 23rd Nov @ Fitzwilliam College Theatre
To ensure peace between their fathers' neighbouring kingdoms, Princess Ida and Prince Hilarion were married rather earlier than most royal couples: Ida was one year old and Hilarion two. Raised separately by their respective fathers, the bride and bridegroom were to be reunited in Ida's 21st year. Yet on the appointed day, the pining lovesick prince was shocked and appalled to learn that the princess had in the meantime discovered her intellectual faculties, founded a women's university, and resolved never to marry. A most logical man, Hilarion reasoned that if he and his friends were to disguise themselves as female students, they could enter the university and woo the princess. A operetta about male chauvinism, early women's colleges, and cross-dressing, Princess Ida is right at home within the University of Cambridge. Join CUG&S in a battle of the sexes this Michaelmas.
